Chapter 16
Phil followed the two Chinese gangsters around the hill and up the tracks. When they went in behind the next hill he knew he couldnât go any further. He couldnât be sure he wouldnât walk right up to them. Returning to hide in the woods by the trailer, he waited for them to show back up.
After a few hours of sitting silently in the brush he was getting restless. He thought of confronting the other Chinese who had stayed with the trailer, but he knew it was the gangsters who he was worried about. Was it a coincidence that they were here? Or were they looking for him?
âBring it on.â
He had to wait until they came back, because he needed to force the situation one way or the other. The waiting was the killer. Time was never his friend and now with too much of it on his hands he was fighting the scenes of his past that kept pushing to the front of his head. Images flickered through his brain. Memories of the acrid smell of gunpowder were so strong he snapped to attention. Phil forced himself not to jump up and shoot something.
When he heard footsteps coming up the trail he rolled his shoulders and unkinked his neck. Noticing that there was only one of them, his nerves ratcheted up another notch. Where was the second guy? Was he sneaking through the bush somewhere?
Watching the criminal head towards the trailer, Phil felt the calmness and patience he was holding onto slip away as his anger pushed to the top. He made a quick decision and went for it. He wasnât the scared type.
He stood and walked towards the intruders. Stopping behind a waist-high bush, just off the road, he confronted the campers. âHello there! You guys lost?â
He watched the leader damn near jump off the ground at the sound of an unexpected visitor. It seemed like he was searching for the source of the voice. The gangster took a quick look at the others before turning to address the intrusion. Phil could see the guy was trying to assess the danger as his eyes scanned left and right.
Then he saw the look of confusion as the guy spotted him. He had to be wondering who was the mad looking guy in camouflage with black face paint? Where did he come from? Was he a threat?
Phil watched as the gangster yelled at one of the other Chinese.
âWhat does he want?â
âHe asks if we are lost.â
âItâs none of his business. Tell him we are fine.â
Phil stayed locked eye to eye with the gangster as the two Chinese talked. Just the stare-down was enough for him. He had been in enough action to tell this guy was serious and capable. He looked like a thug, but his eyes were calculating.
Without waiting for the answer Phil pressed forward, he didnât need to understand the guy. Just watching his reactions to the questions would be enough.
âSo why are you parked so far back in the bush?â
The Chinese translated for the gangster as Phil watched.
